The
Sixth Nexus EQ World Summit on emotional intelligence (EQ) will be
held in Johannesburg, South Africa
for the first time in September 2007.
Previously hosted in Orlando (USA) and in the Netherlands,
this bi-annual international event draws the foremost EQ
practitioners and specialists from around the globe.
The 2007
Summit
features speakers from eleven countries including Bahrain
and India
as well as a large local contingent and solid representation from
the
USA
and the UK.
The
2007 Summit is titled, Inspiring
an Emotionally Intelligent Future and keynote speakers
include Dr Reuven Bar-On, Joshua Freedman and Ayman Sawaf.
Dr Bar-On is renowned for developing one of the initial
assessment tools the Bar-On EQ-i a test which has been
taken by more than 10 000 South Africans.
Freedman of Six Seconds Network is one of a handful of
people to have worked fulltime in the area of EQ development since
its launch in 1995 and Sawaf is best known for co-authoring the
book Executive EQ with
Robert Cooper.
The
line-up includes leaders in the development of EQ in
South Africa such as author Stephanie Vermeulen, Drs
Pieter van Jaarsveld, Jopie de Beer and Rina de Klerk.
The Summit
will be divided into two tracks - business and
education - and will close with an address from Mike Boon, author
of The
African Way. Boon
will be making links between the recent thinking on EQ and the
age-old African concept of ubuntu.
Although
curiosity has existed in the field of EQ for over a decade, as a
relatively new concept, it is still viewed with some skepticism in
business. However, the need
becomes clearer as many leaders realise that they have little time
to tend to their jobs because of the constant demand to deal with
people issues. Motivation,
trust, problem solving and decision-making skills have their
foundation in a healthy level of EQ but too often this is lacking
at the office.
According
to Freedman thoughts and emotions are two notes of the same chord
and expecting employees to leave their emotions at the entrance
door is akin to asking them to be unconscious at work.
A
recent issue of Harvard Business Review claimed the following:
"In
hard times, the soft stuff is often ignored. But emotional
intelligence, it turns out, isn't so soft. If emotional
obliviousness jeopardizes your ability to perform, fend off
aggressors, or be compassionate in a crisis, no amount of
attention to the bottom line will protect your career. Emotional
intelligence isn't a luxury you can dispense with in tough times.
It's a basic tool that, deployed with finesse, is the key to
professional success."
Businesses
are made up of products or processes, property and people and
today the former three yield little competitive advantage.
With parity products and services, a mobile workforce and
globalisation, exceptional organisations are investing in their
relationships with customers, employees, and leaders and
increasingly people skills will become the only meaningful
competitive advantage.
Many
business leaders believe that skills such as EQ should be learnt
at home or at school but sadly this is not generally the case.
In order to feed more emotionally intelligent people into
the workforce in future, many schools are now conducting EQ
programmes in the classroom. For
this reason, the World Summit has dedicated a separate track to
educators and, to make it possible for teachers to attend, the
educational track will be conducted in the afternoons at a
considerably reduced price.
Dr
Pieter van Jaarsveld author of The
Heart of a Winner is the Summits
chairperson and initiated the idea of hosting this world event in
South Africa. Says Van
Jaarsveld: Despite the
challenges of being a young democracy, the countless social and
business success stories reveal the spirit of optimism in South
African society. We are now
considered to be a showpiece of how to create an emotionally
intelligent future and our growing success is an inspiration to
many people around the world who are interested in the practical
application of EQ.
The
conference will be held at the Balalaika Hotel (Sandton)
from the 10 12 September.
