The HR ETQA for South Africa

Introduction

Raising the standards and stature of human resources in South Africa

Human Resources is an internationally recognized and organized profession. The SABPP was established in 1982 as the professional standards body for HR in South Africa. In the last two decades over 7000 professionals have been evaluated and registered and more than 900 candidates taken through a two-year candidateship under an approved Mentor. The Board has accredited the HR Departments of 32 tertiary institutions.

In 2002 the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) accredited the SABPP as the Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA) for human resources. The SABPP ETQA is now fully functional, accrediting providers and registering assessors. This official endorsement of the work of the Board by Government and the extension to ETQA functions, is an acknowledgement of the place and the importance of HR in the economy.

An Act for HR practitioners is on the cards [Human Resources Professions Act draft - June 2004]. Much work has already been done to prepare for this event, such as stakeholder conferences, discussions with the relevant Government parties, an opinion survey etc. There is an estimated 120,000 HR practitioners out there who would join the queue for professional registration the moment an HR Act is promulgated and registration becomes compulsory. We strongly advise all HR practitioners to register as soon as possible, and while the process is still relatively uncomplicated.

To assist with professional registration, continued professional development and the SABPP ETQA registration of Assessors and accreditation of HR providers, the following documents have been made available.
