Intended Audience
This learning programme is intended for all persons who need to use communication techniques effectively. The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of manufacturing and engineering. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. Qualifying learners can demonstrate an understanding of a range of oral and written communication techniques. They are able to effectively use these techniques as required during the course of their work in a supervisory and/or senior technical capacity in an organisation.
Programme entry level requirements
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for workplace communication and working with information. The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to

· Collect and use information
· Communicate with clients
· Compile feasibility and commissioning reports
· Write a technical report
· Communicate in an assertive manner with clients and fellow workers
Programme Outcomes
In this learning programme, we will be covering the following learning outcomes:

· Demonstrate an understanding of a range of written and oral communication techniques used in the workplace and applicable communication theory · Understand the purpose of using a variety of oral and written communication techniques in the workplace · Understand and use regulations, legislation, agreements, policies and procedures and standards governing communication · Understand and use the rules, principles and laws applicable to communication theory · Demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between the effective use of a variety of oral and written communication techniques and effective job functioning as a supervisor/senior technical person |
· Lead discussions and chair meetings in an effective manner according to standard meeting procedures · Respond to 'what if' and 'why' questions covering: o Meeting procedures · Understand and use procedures and techniques: o for leading discussions o for meetings o for chairing |

· Identify the target audience, and structure the reports to both meet the needs of the target audience and to ensure best receptivity by the target audience · Gather and analyse relevant information for workplace reports systematically · Ensure that reports address relevant issues in a logical and clear manner · Present information in reports clearly and articulately · Respond to 'what if' and 'why' questions covering: o Types of workplace reports o Data gathering techniques o Target audience for reports o Techniques for compiling workplace reports · Understand and use attributes, descriptions, characteristics and properties of workplace reports · Understand and use cause and effect implications of developing reports that do not meet the needs of the target audience · Understand and use procedures and techniques: o for gathering data o for writing workplace reports · Ensure that a variety of generated workplace reports are available for scrutiny · Communicate technical information in reports meaningfully |

During the workshop the learner will complete a number of class activities that will form part of his/her formative assessment. In this the learner has the opportunity to practice and explore new skills in a safe environment. The learner should take the opportunity to gather as much information as he/she can to use during his/her workplace learning and self-study.
The workshop will be followed by summative assessment tasks to be completed through self-study in your workplace. In some cases, the learner may be required to do research and complete the tasks in his/her own time.
