Unions sign three-year wage agreement with Sasol

RUSTENBURG – Four trade unions have concluded a three-year wage agreement with Sasol Mining, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday.

NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said the NUM, the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers’ Union, the SA Chemical Workers Union and Solidarity had signed the three-year minimum wage agreement with Sasol Mining.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) did not sign the wage agreement and went on strike.

“Clause 2,8 of the wage agreement said that a Joint Working Committee (JWC) will be formed and to deal with minimum wage and Amcu was not part of the JWC.”

In terms of the agreement, the minimum salary would be increased by R1,000, from R7,300 a month to R8,300, effective from next month.

In the second year, the minimum salary increases from R8,300 to R8,800 a month effective from July next year.

In the third year, the minimum salary increases from R8,800 to R9,300 a month, starting from July 2018.

Employees earning between R8,300 and R10,723 a month will receive 7 percent or R700 increase, whichever is greater effective from December 1, this year.
